July Release Recap

Unlike last month when we saw 50+ new releases in the US and even more in other countries, the new releases for July can be counted on 1 hand

While July lacks quantity, it makes up for it in quality, highlighted by the new collaboration between Nike and Lego.  We also got releases in other fan favorite themes from Star Wars, Icons, and Marvel

43008 Nike Dunk x Lego Set

As a lifelong basketball enthusiast, this set really appeals to me.  I love the basketball coming out of the top and the non symmetrical design of the shoe in relation to the brick built word DUNK.  I would have preferred another colorway, or a variety of colorways, but I’m sure the MOC builders have already started doing what they do.  Can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Icons

Two new fantastic additions to the Icons lineup for July

10357 Shelby Cobra 427 is the latest Icons release depicting an older classic car.  I think this one is an amazing rendition of the iconic Shelby Cobra.  I have not been a huge fan of previous car models from this theme but this one is the best of the bunch.

10375 How to Train Your Dragon: Toothless is the first (of many hopefully) from the beloved movies.  Since its release, there have been a lot of hot takes on this set, good and bad.  The data suggests there are more people that love this set as it is currently on backorder status on Lego.com

Same but different….

As I mentioned earlier, wishing for a different colorway on the Nike Dunk set, this set feels like a different colorway of 76285 Spider-man’s Mask.  I'm not complaining, I will own both of these sets eventually as they will make great additions to my mask display.

Star Wars

Roger Roger

75428 Battle Droid with STAP is the latest release of a brick built droid from the Star Wars universe.  This is a great set and I appreciate the display variety it offers by allowing the battle droid to be removed from the STAP with the ability to stand on its own.

One Random Thought

Back in June when we saw 50+ new sets released, I received a Lego catalog in the mail showcasing all the new releases.  I don't know about you, but I’m a sucker for the catalog in paper form and get a little giddy when it comes in the mail.  Even though I was familiar with all the new releases and had seen them many times on the internet, in my opinion, there is nothing like seeing them in the catalog.  Maybe it takes me back to my childhood when I would pour over the entire catalog many times over and dream of being rich enough to buy every set.

I know I’m not alone in this feeling.  Recently, I sold a Lego catalog on eBay from 1987 I found stashed away in a box in the basement.  The younger generation of Lego fans that have grown up with the internet will never know the days of having to wait on the catalog to come in the mail to see the new sets.  Or seeing a new set for the first time in the Lego aisle at Toys R Us (RIP).

Yes I’m old, but still a kid at heart.

Until next time AFOL’s….
