Building the Perfect Lego Pokemon Team

Hi Lego fans. August 1 is just a couple days away and that’s great news for Pokemon fans because we’re getting 15 new sets! In addition to these new Pokemon sets, we’ll see 70+ sets across various themes, which you can check out in our August releases blog.

For this blog, I’m putting together a Pokemon team. Fellow trainers know that means 6 Pokemon that we get to carry in Poke balls and take on adventures throughout whatever region we wish. With 15 new sets on the way (plus the initial 3 that were already released) we have so many options to choose from. Here’s my team recommendations.

A Little History

I should start off being fully transparent with my fellow Pokemon fans. I was first introduced to Pokemon just like the rest of the world in 1998 with Pokemon Red and Blue. I was hooked and that addiction carried into Gold, Silver, and Crystal in 1999-2000. I played Ruby and Sapphire in 2002, but the first 2 series were my favorites. After 2002, I was pretty much in High School and I thought Pokemon wasn’t cool.. Similar to Lego, I’d call the years following my dark ages. I picked Pokemon back up again when Sword and Shield were released in 2019, when I played the games with my kids. I’m sharing this because many of these choices are based on my interest in the early years of Pokemon. Ok enough about that, let’s dive in.

Heavy Hitters

To build my Pokemon team of 6, I’m leading off with Pokemon that will do some damage and can carry the team. So, I’m starting off with Mewtwo. One of the original Legendary Pokemon has been my favorite since the beginning. By picking up Mewtwo’s Lab Break you get Mewtwo the Pokemon, along with its Smart tag and the chamber. That’s a pretty solid set, although I’d love to see the price come down a bit. (I’m going to assume we’ll see a little bit of a markup because of the whole Smart Play). Mewtwo on its own can handle a majority of the opponent’s team, if not the entire 6 man roster. Along with its Psychic move, I’m pretty sure I taught Mewtwo a variety of type moves like fire, electric and water.

To give Mewtwo a break, I need 2 more heavy hitters to add to the team. I’m picking up Charizard and Jolteon to bring Fire and Electric types to the team, providing balance to Mewtwo’s Pyschic and all around attack. Plus, Jolteon has always been one of my top 10 favorite Pokemon. Having all 3 of these partners will add speed to the team as well. Another great addition, at least in terms of Lego, is the Charizard and Jolteon set are All-In-One Smart Play sets so they include the Smart Brick and charger (The Mewtwo set on the other hand does not). Now, that I have my top 3, let’s look at Pokemon to balance this group.

Choose Your Destiny

Just like in the Pokemon games, building your team is up to you. You get the opportunity to choose which Pokemon you want to be a part of your squad. Hence the famous phrase, “I choose you!” I’ll give you 2 options.

First, you can get the Grass, Fire, and Water starters all in one set. Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly come in one set and can bring this team of 6 more options when it comes to battling. Or, if you’re going the other route and just want cute mons, these 3 starters are pretty adorable. Adding these 3 to Mewtwo, Jolteon, and Charizard creates a cute and fierce team, ready for battle and for hang outs while on your adventure.

Option 2 still provides some cute, but replaces Grass which can be seen as a weaker type with a Rock type Pokemon. First, you’ll add Squirtle from the Buggy Adventure set. With Squirtle, you’ll get a cute Pokemon, Water type, and an awesome vehicle! Then, pick up Charmander and Geodude in the combo set. Of course, this means you’ll have both Charizard and Charmander on the same team. But, that also means Charmander may evolve into Charizard (Come on MOC builders!). I kind of prefer this route to round out the team because I’m a big Squirtle fan and the buggy could be super fun and useful.

The Team

  • 3 Pokemon Team Option: Mewtwo, Charizard, Jolteon

  • 6 Pokemon Team Option 1: Mewtwo, Charizard, Jolteon, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly

  • 6 Pokemon Team Option 2: Mewtwo, Charizard, Jolteon, Charmander, Geodude, and Squirtle

If you want to just carry 3 Pokemon on your adventure, the team of Mewtwo, Charizard, and Jolteon will serve you well. And, if we’re thinking about the cost of these Lego sets, this 3 team of heavy hitters fits in a budget of under $200 (not including taxes).

To pick up all 6 Pokemon, you’ll still be under $250 which is pretty solid. Going the 3-pack route with Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, you’re spending $225 before taxes. Or, going the Charmander, Geodude, and Squirtle (plus a cool vehicle) you’ll spend $240 before taxes.

Any of these options would make a great Pokemon team! But, that’s my team and recommendations. I’d love to know yours! Leave a comment with your Lego Pokemon team.
