Lego Pokemon - Will You Catch ‘em All?
My childhood dream is coming true! Lego is releasing Pokemon sets this year with 3 sets available for preorder here. Are you planning to catch ’em all?
Brief History
I’ll go back a bit to share some of my history with Pokemon. When I was a kid, my brothers and I played Pokemon on the Nintendo Game Boy. I started on Pokemon Blue and my first starter ever was Squirtle. I didn’t collect the cards as a kid, but my son collects some every now and then and has a binder he’s proud of. As my kids got a little older, we played Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch. We also have a few of the Mega Blok sets. So, I have some love for Pokemon and I’m excited to see Lego (another thing I love a lot) get the IP to release new sets.
Mega had Pokemon products since 2017 and there were quite a few that were pretty awesome including the Poke Ball, some of the pixel type builds, and Eevee which we built and still have displayed. This is the first year that Lego has the Pokemon IP. Pre-orders have already started on all 3 of the first releases.
The Lego Sets
Eevee: Set #72151 // 587 pieces // $59.99 USD RRP
Pikachu: Set #72152 // 2,050 pieces // $199.99 USD RRP
Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise: #72153 // 6,838 pieces // $649.99 USD RRP
All 3 sets are 18+ sets, so no kids allowed. Just kidding. I’m assuming the kids that want these sets will make an attempt to build the set, then ask their parents to finish the build.
Of course, this is Brick Dynasty, so unless you’re getting a discount on these sets I’d recommend not buying on release day on February 27. (And definitely don’t buy them above RRP)
My Thoughts and Opinions
As I mentioned earlier, seeing Pokemon in Lego form is a childhood dream come true. That being said, there’s something missing here for me. I’m not as excited as I thought I would be.
All of the sets look pretty good. I’d love to get my hands on these sets to build theme because most Lego building experiences add to the awesomeness of the Lego set. But, I made a promise to myself this year no new Lego buying - my personal Brick Broke challenge of 2026 - so I’ll have to admire from a distance.
While the first 3 announced sets look nice, they also look very similar to the Mega products. I’m torn a bit because Mega and Lego are both products made of bricks, so how much different can the Lego sets be right? Maybe it’s also that I’m relying too much on nostalgia and it’s not the same feeling as an adult, at least not right now.
As we continue to get more information on Lego Pokemon sets I’m hopeful for more Pokemon I like such as Mewtwo, Tyranitar, Jolteon, Ampharos, and more. I’d also love to see playsets geared towards younger builders because Lego and Pokemon should also be played with. I’ll be honest and say I’m a little selfish with this wish because I want to see Ash, Brock and Misty minifigures as well as smaller Pokemon figures.
I’m just one person and I’m sure you have thoughts and opinions about the newest Lego theme - Pokemon, so let me know what you think in the comments, on X or in our discord. Looking forward to hearing from you!
