BRICKED: A Star Wars Special
Happy May and Happy Star Wars month, Lego fans!
In this edition of my BRICKED reviews of Lego sets I’m looking at a head to head battle of 2 starfighters: Jedi Bob’s Starfighter versus the V-19 Torrent Starfighter. I built both recently with my son, and while he was mostly interested in the minifigures, I appreciated the building experience of both ships. Let’s take a look at both in this special Star Wars edition with BRICKED scores for each set.
V-19 Torrent Starfighter
Box
An action packed box on the front and back of the V-19 Torrent Starfighter. The front features the ship in action in space, firing the blasters, the boosters taking off, and an explosion. The back shows off Obi-Wan Kenobi versus Asajj Ventress in a light saber duel, with the Clone Pilot in action too. Both sides of this box offer different angles of the Starfighter to provide a glimpse of what you can expect with the finished build. The back of the box also shows off how the ship wings function which is a great feature.
Box score: 5 out of 5.
Retirement
Released in August 2025, the V-19 set will be on shelves until mid 2027. That means it’ll be around for at least 2 years, with a potential retirement date pushed out. Because of the uncertainty, I’ll rank this set low, but if anything changes then this score can change too.
Retirement score: 1.5 out of 5.
Investment
RRP for this set is $65 for 567 pieces, but I’ve seen this set go on sale for 20% off at a few different retailers including Amazon. Ventress and the dual light sabers and Obi-Wan add value in my opinion, and the ship is pretty cool which I’ll go into more detail below. But, because this set hasn’t retired yet, I don’t know if this can be a good investment yet.
Investment score: 2 out of 5.
Creativity
The Lego design team did a great job with the functionality of this set. They were very creative in designing how the wings rotate in the upright position when docked and the angle position while in flight mode, as well as the back wing that rotates up and down. I also really like the blasters - both the stud shooters and the shooters that you should pretend to play with using the “pew pew” sound effects.
One of my favorite elements they used in this build is what I consider a vintage piece which are the trash cans in black for the booster/exhaust for the ship. I remember these from my 90’s pirate sets and I love seeing them in current builds.
Creativity score: 4.5 out of 5.
Kid-Friendly
Not as kid-friendly as Jedi Bob’s Starfighter, the V-19 Torrent Starfighter is a 9+ set. There are a few more advanced building techniques in this set compared to Jedi-Bob, but nothing too challenging.
In terms of play-ability, there’s a lot more functionality with the wings in the V-19 set compared to Jedi Bob, although both are swoosh-able. On the plus side, you do get to have an awesome light saber battle with Ventress and Obi-Wan.
Kid-Friendly score: 4 out of 5.
Experience
I enjoyed building the V-19 set because I didn’t know what to expect in terms of how they were going to design the functioning wings. But, as you build, you learn the techniques and I enjoyed the building experience.
As I mentioned above, the part usage is a nice bonus for me because of the nostalgic factor with the trash barrels. I also like the trans-yellow colored cockpit for a similar reason. Putting together the minifigures was also satisfying because I admired the details that went into the prints, as well as the shape of Ventress’ light saber handles.
Experience score: 4 out of 5.
Display
The V-19 Torrent Starfighter is a great display set because you can rotate the wings into dock mode for the ship. However, similar to Jedi Bob’s set, Ventress and Obi-Wan don’t have a place to stand for an effective display.
Display score: 3.5 out of 5.
Final BRICKED Score
The V-19 Torrent Starfighter set gets a BRICKED score of 3.5 out of 5.
Uncertainty of the retirement information impact the investment score and both bring the score down, but the V-19 has high marks in every other category. Great build and solid minifigures are what to expect in this Star Wars set.
Jedi Bob’s Starfighter
Box
The front of the box is bright and full of color and you can almost feel the starfighter speeding through the scene. On the bottom left of the front there is also a great “Rebuild the Galaxy” logo that identifies what type of set your about to build. For new fans to the rebuilding the galaxy subtheme, the minifigures are a fun tease because who’s Jedi Bob and why is Admiral Ackbar a Trooper?! The back of the box offers more of the same awesomeness with another angle of the ship, a bright backdrop, and minifigure characters in action.
Box score: 5 out of 5.
Retirement
Released in August 2024 and retiring in a few months at the end of July 2026, Jedi Bob has been on shelves for 2 years. Not too long, but not all that short. This set also seen the retirement date move once, initially supposed to retire last year.
Retirement score: 2 out of 5.
Investment
RRP for Jedi Bob is $40 for just 305 pieces. I’m sure we’ve all seen this set on sale, especially over at Amazon, for $32. If you’re lucky you’ve seen in-store (and maybe online) sales too. The Jedi Bob minifigure was only seen once before in 2002, Ackbar was in a few other past sets even though they’re different variations.
Investment score: 2 out of 5.
Creativity
The Rebuild the Galaxy is a fun take on remixing Star Wars sets and the minifigures are the highlights of creativity here. The fan favorite Jedi Bob returns, Admiral Ackbar is a Trooper, and SR-V0 the droid is a fun mess of bricks. Inside of the Starfighter you’ll find some fun Easter eggs with blue milk and a banana. I also like the element choices like the skates, rods, and technic pieces.
I do think that underneath the Starship could have been built out better, in fact it’s a little bare in my opinion. I am also not a fan of leave some of the studs not covered like they chose to do with the blasters on the wings.
Creativity score: 3.5 out of 5.
Kid-Friendly
My son is 7 and he had no trouble building this set with me despite its 8+ suggestion on the box. The instructions are easy enough to follow, especially for experience Lego builders.
This set is also kid-friendly because of the fun minifigures and blue milk! The play-ability of swooshing ships always ranks high for me. One thing I would have liked to see is a small build or ship for Ackbar, and maybe a space for SV-R0.
Kid-Friendly score: 4 out of 5.
Experience
My favorite part of the building experience was putting together the minifigures and my son asking who are these characters? We looked up a few so that I had the stories correct. It was fun to see these characters in these variations come to life with Lego Star Wars.
The build is a nice experience, with techniques that I found interesting and something new to learn from kids. I like how they designed the tail of the Starfighter with a SNOT technique, as well as the angled technic elements to create the slant effect for the wings. Finally, for some reason the 2 Lego pieces to create blue milk is super satisfying.
Experience score: 4 out of 5.
Display
I think that this Starfighter is built for play more so than being on display. While the ship could look great on display on it’s own with Jedi Bob in the drivers seat, there’s no plate for Ackbar Trooper or space on the ship for SR-V0 to display the minifigures nicely.
Display score: 2.5 out of 5.
Final BRICKED Score
The Jedi Bob Starfighter set gets a BRICKED score of 3.29 out of 5.
Solid showing in the box, kid-friendly and experience ratings, but average or below average in most of the other categories. I do think this Star Wars set is a fun one for kids, and collectors will appreciate Jedi Bob and blue milk.
